StaffUp ASAP Launches Second Round of Training
The StaffUp ASAP initiative continues to build momentum as we launch the second round of training for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies and staff across the country. Following the successful launch of our first pilot training on January 6, 2026, the program is expanding to support additional participants committed to strengthening the disability services workforce. As of March 16, VR agency applications are now being accepted for the 2nd training cohort.
StaffUp ASAP was created to address one of the most pressing challenges facing disability service systems today: recruiting, developing, and retaining a strong workforce that can effectively support people with disabilities in achieving meaningful employment outcomes. The training focuses on practical strategies agencies can use to build stronger teams, improve onboarding and professional development, and create more sustainable workforce practices.
Encouraging Early Response to Training
The early response to the training has been encouraging. So far, 23 VR agencies are engaged in the initiative, with 42 participants currently enrolled in the pilot training. Early progress also shows strong engagement from the field, with a 99% completion rate among participants in the pilot modules and more than 300 professionals subscribed to receive updates about the project and upcoming opportunities.
“These early indicators suggest a strong demand for tools and training focused on workforce development within the VR and disability services systems. Participants in the training are exploring strategies to strengthen staffing pipelines, support professional growth for service providers, and improve collaboration across the workforce that supports people with disabilities,”
- Beth Gaertner, Stout Vocational Rehabilitation Institute’s Director of Education.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Training Opportunities
The launch of the second training cohort marks an important step in the growth of StaffUp ASAP. Over the coming months, the project will continue refining the training based on participant feedback and lessons learned from the pilot. This iterative approach will help ensure that the training reflects the real-world challenges faced by agencies and providers.
Looking ahead, the project aims to expand access to the training beyond VR agencies.
Future cohorts will be designed for community rehabilitation providers, workforce development organizations, and other professionals who support employment pathways for people with disabilities. These expanded opportunities are expected to begin in 2027, allowing the project team to build on the insights gained during the VR-focused pilot phase.
In addition to new training cohorts, the StaffUp ASAP initiative will continue developing tools, resources, and learning opportunities that support workforce development across the disability services ecosystem. The long-term goal is to help organizations build stronger staffing systems that ultimately improve employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities.
